SHA to Add 117 Spaces to Ridesharing Lot near Northbound I-270

(March 30, 2009) –The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) has begun a $620,000 project to expand the MD 80 (Fingerboard Road) ridesharing lot near northbound I-270 in Urbana, Frederick County by adding 117 new parking spaces.

“The Urbana ridesharing lot is one which continues to reach capacity by 7 a.m.,” said Maryland Transportation Secretary John D. Porcari. “We encourage all Marylanders to carpool, which can reduce emissions which improve air quality and the Chesapeake Bay.”

The existing 164-space ridesharing lot is located along MD 80 and reaches capacity by 7 a.m. SHA anticipates completion of the project by mid-June, weather permitting. This project is part of a $2 million statewide commitment for ridesharing expansion in 2009 and 2010.

With Frederick County having one of the highest demands for ridesharing expansion in the State, additional ridesharing expansion is proposed in Frederick County for US 340 at Mt. Zion Road (43 additional spaces), I-70 at MD 17 (40 additional spaces), and a proposed 100 space new facility near I-70 at MD 355 as part of the interchange project along I-70 at MD 355/MD 85.

SHA awarded the contract to Kinsley Construction of Timonium. Those who have questions about traffic operations along MD 80, or other State numbered routes in Frederick County, may call SHA’s District 7 Office at 301-624-8100 or toll free at For additional ridesharing locations, log onto www.marylandroads.com
