Road Improvement Project Will Improve Safety and Ride Quality in Kensington           
          
(March 30, 2009) – Next week, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will begin a safety and resurfacing project along a section of MD 193 (University Boulevard). The project extends more than one mile along MD 193 between MD 586 (Veirs Mill Road) and Farragut Avenue in Kensington, Montgomery County. Weather permitting, the project should be complete by late fall.          
          
The $2.7 million project also includes cleaning, repairing and replacing the existing storm drain inlets and pipes, concrete median and curbs and gutters. Safety improvements include upgrading sidewalks to Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliancy, adding new pavement markings, and upgrading existing pedestrian signals to countdown and accessible pedestrian signals.          
          
During construction, there will be single lane closures and possible lane shifts along MD 193 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., Monday through Friday; overnight single lane closures between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m., with double lane closures between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. Monday through Friday. SHA will provide variable message signs, drums, and arrow boards to guide motorists through the work zone. SHA awarded the contract to Rustler Construction, Inc of Lanham.
