(July 15, 2011)  -- Beginning July 20, the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) will direct traffic onto a new relocated from southbound US 29 (Columbia Pike) to access both directions of Fairland Road.  A new flashing beacon at Fairland Road from the relocated southbound US 29 ramp will guide motorists to either east or westbound Fairland Road.  The beacon will flash red for motorists on the ramp and yellow for motorists on Fairland Road.  This new configuration is part of the State Highway Administration’s $2.5 billion Intercounty Connector (ICC) project.

The ramp is located approximately one-third of a mile prior to the existing Fairland Road intersection with southbound US 29.  Motorists must be prepared to use the new ramp before reaching the intersection.   SHA will use variable message signs and temporary signs to alert motorists prior to the new ramp.

SHA will begin lane closures on southbound US 29 prior to Fairland Road at 8 p.m. on Tuesday night, July 19 to begin the transition work for the new ramp.  For more information about the project, please call the ICC Community Outreach staff at 1-866-462-0020, or visit the ICC project web site at www.iccproject.com.

While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert - look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers.  Slow down and don't follow too closely.  Safer Driving. Safer Work Zones.  For everyone.
