(July 14, 2011) – Next week, the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) will assist CSX Transportation by closing US 1 Alternate (Baltimore Avenue) between Decatur Street and Emerson Street near Hyattsville, Prince George’s County. Weather permitting CSX is advising that Baltimore Avenue will be closed for five days, ending on Monday, July 25.

The closure allows CSX Transportation to repair/replace sections of the track at the at-grade crossing along Baltimore Avenue near Decatur Street. SHA is providing detour and variable message signs that will guide motorists safely around CSX’s rail project.

The following detour will be in place on Wednesday, July 20:
•Southbound US 1 Alternate – Motorists traveling south toward Washington D.C. should bear right onto southbound US 1 (Rhode Island Avenue), then turn left onto Charles Armentrout Drive and back to US 1 Alternate.
•Northbound US 1 Alternate – Motorists must turn right onto Charles Armentrout Drive, right onto US 1 and back to US 1 Alternate.

Those who have questions about the rail crossing project should call CSX Transportation at 1-215-209-4580. For information on US 1 Alternate, US 1 or any other State numbered roadways in Prince George’s County should call SHA’s District 3 Office at 1-800-749-0737.

While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert - look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don't follow too closely. Safer Driving. Safer Work Zones. For everyone.
