(July 14, 2011) – The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) is starting a project to repair the westbound MD 26 (Liberty Road) bridge over Monocacy River north of the City of Frederick.  Starting this week, crews will close a lane on the bridge Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Over the next several months crews will repair various steel girders and trusses beneath the bridge.  Crews will also repair the center of the concrete support column.  The 79 year-old bridge carries 30,000 motorists each day.  Crews will place temporary signs and barrels to guide motorists through the work zone. SHA anticipates completing the $525,000 project this fall, weather permitting.

SHA awarded the contract to A&M Concrete of Virginia.  Customers who have questions about traffic operations on MD 26 or other State numbered routes in Frederick County, may call SHA’s District 7 Office at 301-624-8100 or toll free at1-800-635-5119.

Construction season is here with numerous active work zone sites that include major construction projects taking months to complete and mobile operations taking only minutes.  While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert - look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers.  Slow down and don't follow too closely.  Safer Driving. Safer Work Zones.  For everyone.
