Construction on American Recovery and Reinvestment Act Projects are Underway

(April 7, 2009) – The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) recently began a series of resurfacing projects in Dorchester County. Weather permitting, construction will be complete by mid-July on all projects.

The resurfacing projects are funded using $2.3 million of President Barack Obama’s landmark American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds. Projects such as these will stimulate Maryland’s economy by preserving or maintaining Maryland jobs.

The first section to be resurfaced began last week along six miles of MD 16 (Taylors Island Road) between the Taylors Island Bridge and Salt Marsh Road. Weather permitting, resurfacing will be complete by late-May. Other resurfacing projects to be complete by late summer include:

• MD 16 (Church Creek Road) between south of Egypt Road and Maple Dam Rd (one-half mile) in Cambridge

• MD 335 (Hooper Island Road) from the town of Golden Hill to Swan Harbor (four miles)

• MD 392 (Harrison Ferry Road) from the Marshy Hope Creek Bridge to MD 313 (Eldorado Road) (nearly three miles) in Federalsburg

Motorists can expect single lane closures Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. SHA will use traffic flaggers, barrels, dynamic message signs and safety signs to guide drivers through the work zones. Motorists are advised to allow extra travel time as a result of the lane closures.

These projects are part of an areawide contract awarded to George & Lynch, Inc. of Dover, Delaware. Citizens who have questions about this project or any other State numbered roadway in Dorchester County should call SHA’s District 1 office at 410-677-4000 or toll free at 1-800-825-4742.

SHA encourages all motorists to drive responsibly and “Think Orange” while driving through highway work zones by driving the speed limit and remaining alert at all times. Learn more about work zone safety and the Choose Safety for Life campaign at www.choosesafetyforlife.com.
