(February 3, 2011) – The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) is beginning a $1 million safety and resurfacing project on approximately one mile of MD 187 (Old Georgetown Road) between North Brook Lane and MD 355 (Wisconsin Avenue) in downtown Bethesda.  Weather permitting, the project should be complete this fall.

Project work includes grinding and resurfacing all lanes of MD 187 between North Brook Lane and MD 355.  SHA will also patch the existing roadway, replace inlets, clean pipes, upgrade existing sidewalks and ramps to American with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards, install new pavement markings, and replace concrete curbs and gutters.

Sidewalk access will be maintained on one side of MD 187 throughout the sidewalk upgrades.  During construction, SHA will close one lane on MD 187 Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and overnight between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.  During the final phase of work, which includes paving, there will be double lane closures overnight Sunday through Thursday between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.

The work ties into the 2009 resurfacing project between Center Drive and North Brook Lane and will also benefit pedestrians who live and work in downtown Bethesda.  The project will improve access to local businesses, bus stops and the Bethesda Metro Station.  This section of MD 187 carries more than 31,000 vehicles per day, with that number expected to increase to more than 38,000 by 2030.

SHA awarded the contract to M. Luis Construction Co., Inc.  When workers are on the road, THINK ORANGE, which is the color of construction signs, barrels and warning devices.  Please slow down, stay alert and expect the unexpected.  Choose safety for life and make work zone safety your business at www.choosesafetyforlife.com
