(February 3, 2011) – The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) is beginning a $1.9 million safety and resurfacing project on more than 1.5 miles of MD 410 (East West Highway) between MD 212 (Riggs Road)and MD 500 (Queens Chapel Road) in Hyattsville.  Weather permitting, construction will be complete this fall.

The project will improve ride quality and safety for more than 31,000 drivers who use MD 410 to access local shopping centers, the Prince George’s Plaza Metro Station, and other community facilities. Upgrading sidewalk ramps and installing new pavement markings will provide additional safety for pedestrians along the MD 410 corridor.

Crews will begin preliminary patching and concrete work this winter as weather permits.  The majority of the work will begin spring 2011.  SHA will patch, grind and resurface the existing roadway and upgrade the existing guardrail.  Other work includes cleaning and repairing existing inlets and drainage pipes, upgrading sidewalk ramps to meet American with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards, replacing the concrete median, replacing loop detectors, and installation of new pavement markings.

Motorists should expect delays on MD 410 during construction:
  • SHA will close a lane on westbound MD 410 Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.
  • SHA will close a lane on eastbound MD 410 Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m.
  • During the final grinding and resurfacing phase in late 2011, single lane closures will occur on both sides of MD 410 overnight Monday through Friday between 8 p.m. and  10 p.m., with double lane closures between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.
SHA awarded the contract to Ardent Company, LLC.  Crews will provide variable message signs, jersey barrier wall, drums, and arrow boards to guide motorists through the work zone.

When workers are on the road, THINK ORANGE, which is the color of construction signs, barrels and warning devices.  Please slow down, stay alert and expect the unexpected.  Choose to make work zone safety your business at www.choosesafetyforlife.com
