(February 2, 2011 – 4:15 a.m.) – Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) issued warnings about standing water on the roadways for the morning drive.  Snow still clogs many of the area storm drains and melting snow mixing with the heavy rains is causing flooding issues.  Heavy rain is also creating a hydroplane situation and SHA asks all motorists to slow down.

In the northern and western sections of Maryland are there is still a chance of icy conditions especially on bridges, ramps, overpasses and low lying areas.  Crews are stationed around these hot spots to respond to emergencies as needed.

Another problem facing drivers is the potential of falling trees.  The ground is over-saturated from last week’s snow and today’s rain creating the possibility for trees to become uprooted and fall; some could fall across area roads.

Remember to buckle up and “Take it Slow on Ice and Snow.”  Before leaving the office or home, log onto www.roads.maryland.gov and click the CHART icon for the latest road conditions, live traffic cameras and a variety of information to help with travel decisions and planning.  Citizens can also call the winter storm hotline at 1-800-327-3125 and follow SHA on Twitter @MDSHA.
