What:
SHA will host an informational meeting to familiarize residents and commuters with a major bridge rehabilitation project in northern Baltimore County.

Originally built in 1958, the Downes Road Bridge over I-83 (Baltimore-Harrisburg Expressway) is showing signs of deterioration of the bridge deck (driving surface).  The deck replacement project will extend the service life of the bridge 30-50 years.  The project will also include: cleaning and painting of steel beams; repairs to abutments; replacement the retaining walls adjacent to each side of the bridge; and reshaping the bridge piers.

This project is part of SHA’s ongoing bridge preservation and replacement program to provide safe and reliable bridge replacement and repair in a timely manner.
Interested parties are encouraged to attend the open-house style meeting to learn about proposed construction plans and bridge detours.  SHA staff will be available to provide information and answer questions at project display areas; no formal presentation will be given.

When:
Tuesday, August 31, 2010, 5:30 – 7 p.m.

Where:
Seventh District Elementary School – Cafeteria 20300 York Road, Parkton MD 21120

Why:
Next spring, SHA will begin a project to replace the deck on the two-lane Downes Road Bridge over I-83. The bridge will be closed to all traffic summer 2011.  The detour route includes MD 45 (York Road), MD 439 (Old York Road) and Sampson Road.  There will also be off-peak daytime and nighttime single lane closures along I-83 in the vicinity of the bridge, located between Exit 33 – MD 439 (Old York Road) and Exit 36 York Road

Those who would like additional information on the project or the upcoming meeting may contact Mr. Jeff Robert, SHA Bridge Design Manager, at 1-888-375-1084, SHA’s District 4 Office at    1-866-998-0367 or by e-mail at SHADistrict4@sha.state.md.us
