(June 23, 2010) –Today, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) opened a section of the $18.3 million South Mountain rest areas along eastbound and westbound I-70 at the Frederick / Washington County line.  Those who travel along I-70 now have access to an expanding parking area and updated restroom facilities.

Located along eastbound and westbound I-70 between Exits 35 and 42 in Frederick County, both locations have ADA-compliant walking trails, picnic areas, parking and restrooms.  The reconstructed facilities have 76 parking spaces for vehicles, 26 parking spaces for commercial trucks and six parking spaces for RVs and buses.  SHA also enhanced the facility by adding a children’s play area, and a pet area.

“Thousands of travelers use I-70 each day and since the construction began, they have had to venture beyond this location for a rest stop,” said SHA District Engineer Dave Coyne.  “This opening grants immediate respite to travelers by allowing access to restrooms and parking.”

The previous centers and rest room facilities were each approximately 1,250 square feet.  The new Welcome Centers are each approximately 3,940 square feet and the new restrooms are 6,180 square feet.  The new buildings will reduce energy consumption and have a reduced operating cost as a result of lower energy use lighting, sensors to monitor water usage and a wastewater treatment plant.

The original restrooms and parking areas were constructed in 1972; the Welcome Center buildings were added in 1978.  The State Highway Administration awarded the contract to Kinsley Construction of Timonium.  The welcome center is managed by the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development (DBED) and will reopen in late summer.  It will offer amenities that will provide visitors with travel information as well as a comprehensive orientation to the region’s heritage, recreational and culture resources.
