(July 22, 2010) – Beginning Sunday, August 1 and continuing through the end of October the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will close MD 795 (Maryland Avenue) at Cambridge Creek to repair and repaint the drawbridge.

Work includes cleaning and repainting structural steel and mechanical components of the movable spans, and repairing the drawbridge and bridge approaches.

Motorists on US 50 who wish to access points west of Cambridge Creek - including Academy Street, the Cambridge historic district and Long Wharf Park – must use Cedar Street instead of Maryland Avenue.

The Cambridge Creek drawbridge spans will remain locked in the upright (open) position for most of the closure period to facilitate work on the underside.  Marine traffic will not be affected.

Maryland Avenue in Cambridge carries an average of 11,600 vehicles per day.  Originally constructed in 1938, the Cambridge Creek drawbridge is one of the busiest movable spans in Maryland with more than 5,700 openings each year.

The Cambridge Creek drawbridge is one of six bridges under a $1.4 million painting contract that covers Dorchester, Somerset and Wicomico counties.  The repair work is being performed by Covington Machine and Welding of Annapolis.  The painting contractor is Klicos Painting Company of Baltimore.
