SHA Will Add New Left Turn Lane to Improve Traffic Flow along MD 650 in the Sunshine Area

(May 6, 2009) – Next week, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will begin an intersection improvement project along MD 650 at MD 97 in Sunshine, Montgomery County. Weather permitting, construction should be complete late summer/early fall 2009.

The $523,000 project includes widening less than a quarter mile section of southbound MD 650 approaching MD 97 to accommodate a new “left turn only” lane at the intersection. Currently there are extensive delays as through traffic at the intersection is forced to wait for the southbound left-turning vehicles. The new traffic pattern will allow motorists along southbound MD 650 to use the new left-turn lane, while allowing other traffic to turn right, or go straight in the right lane.

Other work includes roadway resurfacing, driveway reconstruction, installation of pavement markings, and replacement of road signs.

During construction, motorists can expect flaggers and possible lane shifts Monday through Friday at any time. SHA will provide variable message signs, drums, and arrow boards to guide motorists through the work zone. SHA awarded the contract to Melvin Benhoff Sons, Inc.

When workers are on the road, THINK ORANGE, which is the color of construction signs, barrels and warning devices. Please slow down, stay alert and expect the unexpected. Choose to make work zone safety your business at www.choosesafetyforlife.com
