(May 7, 2009) – On Sunday evening, May 10, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will begin a resurfacing project along MD 90 (Ocean City Expressway) in Worcester County. Weather permitting, resurfacing will be complete by the end of June. Work will not take place during the Memorial Day Weekend. All lanes along the US 50 Harry Kelly Bridge, which was impacted since earlier this spring, will be open prior to the beginning of the MD 90 resurfacing project.

SHA will resurface nearly 10 miles of MD 90 between east of US 50 and east of MD 589 (Race Track Road). MD 90, which carries an average of 13,900 vehicles per day with higher volumes during summer months, will be closed in both directions Sunday through Thursday evenings between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. to expedite the resurfacing. Motorists traveling to and from Ocean City and Ocean Pines will be directed to the US 50 Bridge as an alternate.

Funded by $2.3 million of President Barack Obama’s landmark American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), projects such as this are stimulating Maryland’s economy by creating or saving thousands of Maryland jobs.

This project is part of an areawide contract awarded to American Paving Corporation of Eden. Citizens who have questions about this project or any other State numbered roadway in Worcester County should call SHA’s District 1 office at 410-677-4000 or toll free at 1-800-825-4742.

SHA encourages all motorists to drive responsibly and “Think Orange” while driving through highway work zones by driving the speed limit and remaining alert at all times.
