Motorists Should Expect Temporary Single-Lane Closures Along US 15 Beginning Early May; Resurfacing will Improve Safety and Ride Quality

(May 7, 2009) – This week, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) began a project to resurface more than six miles along US 15 (Catoctin Mountain Highway) from north of Mountville Road to the Potomac River. SHA anticipates completing the $2.3 million project in early July, weather permitting.

Resurfacing along this section of US 15 will pass through SHA’s roundabout project at the intersection of US 15 and MD 464 (Point of Rocks Road), currently under construction. Crews will coordinate construction efforts on both projects. SHA expects to complete the roundabout in early June, weather permitting. Once the roundabout is completed, crews will pave the approaches to the US 15/MD 464 roundabout and remaining sections of US 15.

During construction, motorists should expect temporary single-lane closures along US 15 from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Thursday and from midnight to 5 a.m. on Friday. SHA will use barrels, cones, variable message signs, arrow boards and temporary signs to guide motorists through the work zone. More than 16,500 vehicles travel along this road each day. Motorists should be prepared for possible delays.

During the next several months, there could be more than 350 work zones across Maryland. Remember that work zones are not only large construction projects possibly taking years to complete, but smaller, mobile operations such as mowing, pothole repair and litter pick ups. SHA awarded the contract to F.O. Day Inc. of Rockville. Citizens who have questions about traffic operations along US 15 or other State numbered routes in Frederick County may call SHA’s District 7 Office at 301-624-8100 or toll free at 1-800-635-5119.
