MD 109 to be Reduced to One Lane with Traffic Controlled by a Temporary Traffic Signal

(May 6, 2009) – Next week, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will begin a bridge rehabilitation project along MD 109 (Old Hundred Road) over Little Bennett Creek, in Hyattstown, Montgomery County. Weather permitting, construction will be complete late fall 2009.

The $850,000 project includes removing and replacing the concrete bridge deck, cleaning and painting the steel beams, and repairing portions of the bridge abutments.

During construction, traffic will be reduced to one lane along MD 109 with alternating traffic at all times. Traffic along MD 109, as well as the ramps from I-270 to MD 109 will be controlled by a temporary traffic signal located at the bottom of the ramp from I-270 to MD 109. SHA will also provide variable message signs, drums, and arrow boards to guide motorists through the work zone.

The MD 109 Bridge, originally constructed in 1951, is structurally sound but needs repairs to its concrete deck, and a portion of the abutments. The proposed repairs will extend the life of the bridge an additional 30 to 50 years. SHA awarded the contract to Titan Industrial Coatings Contractor.

SHA reminds all drivers to buckle up, obey posted speed limits, think orange, and stay alert. Citizens who have questions about traffic operations on MD 109 or other State numbered routes in Montgomery County may call SHA’s District 3 Office at 301-513-7300 or toll free at 1-800-749-0737.
