Motorists Can Expect Single-Lane Closure Starting Next Week

(October 1, 2026) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration is beginning construction on a $10 million bicycle and pedestrian route along MD 390 (16th Street) between Spring Street and 2nd Avenue in Silver Spring. The project is an example of the Moore-Miller Administration and the Maryland Department of Transportation’s focus on safety. To advance work on the route, crews will implement a single-lane closure on northbound 16th Street for approximately nine months, beginning Monday, October 5. The State Highway Administration strongly encourages planning for additional travel time during construction.

Motorists can expect single-lane closures Mondays through Fridays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and off-peak nighttime single-lane closures as needed within the project limits. Work hours are subject to change. State Highway Administration will make every effort to complete this project as quickly as possible while minimizing impacts to residents, businesses and motorists.

The project is expected to be completed by late 2027 or early 2028, weather permitting. The bicycle and pedestrian route will provide connections to the upcoming MD 97 Montgomery Hills project and other bicycle facilities, as well as the Forest Glen Metro Station and the future Woodside Purple Line Station, benefiting all roadway users and will include:

  • an eight-foot-wide, two-way protected bike path;
  • a concrete or grass median to separate vehicular traffic from bicyclists;
  • a six-foot-wide sidewalk compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA);
  • reconstruction of the 16th Street and Spring Street intersection into a bicycle-protected intersection;
  • installation of traffic signals, signs and lighting;
  • upgraded stormwater management facilities and landscaping.

Contractor Brawner Builders Inc. of Hunt Valley will perform the work. For project updates, visit the MD 390 Project Portal. Customers who have questions may contact the District 3 Office at 301-513-7300 or toll-free at 1-800-749-0737.

The State Highway Administration appreciates customers’ patience during construction as we work to improve Maryland’s transportation system. Drivers are asked to stay alert and focused and be aware of reduced speed limits and driving patterns. Slow down and move over in work zones. It’s the law. Motorists in need may dial #77 on their mobile devices for assistance.

This project reflects the Moore-Miller Administration’s focus on initiatives that enhance safety, expand accessibility and promote economic opportunity. It also is consistent with the Maryland Department of Transportation’s Serious About Safety initiative, a department-wide commitment to advance improvements that drive safety goals and save lives.
