Maryland Remembers; Maryland Fights Back: New DUI Prevention Strategy Unveiled

ANNAPOLIS, MD (December 7, 2009) – Lt. Governor Anthony G. Brown will honor individuals who lost their lives to impaired driving crashes and take the next step in ending these  tragedies.  At the Maryland Remembers ceremony Wednesday, Lt. Governor Brown will meet with surviving family members and friends of impaired driving crash victims and present a new Governor’s Executive Order.

WHO:        
Lt. Governor Anthony G. Brown, MDOT Secretary of Transportation Beverley K. Swaim-Staley, and other State and Federal leaders will join surviving family members and friends of impaired driving victims at the Maryland Remembers Memorial.
Meet and interview the courageous families taking a stand.

WHAT:      
Ceremony to honor the lives lost - More than 150 people died in impaired driving crashes last year. Impaired driving crashes kill blindly, striking all ages, demographics and socio-economic backgrounds. See the faces – mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, toddlers – behind the numbers.
Maryland Remembers – A ceremony where surviving family members and friends pay tribute to victims of drunk driving.
Maryland Takes Action – On the heels of new tougher DUI laws and new strategies,  enforcement partners redouble efforts and ask all drivers to fight back and report suspected drunk drivers by calling 911.

VISUAL: 
In an emotional processional, loved ones will present photographs of victims in a dramatic visual of the many lives lost to impaired driving-related crashes. 
       
WHY:         
The holidays in December and January mark one of the most dangerous time periods with regard to impaired driving-related deaths.  Despite the fact that impaired driving crashes are preventable, a drunk driver kills one person nationally every 30 minutes.
