***TRAFFIC ALERT*** STATE HIGHWAY ADMINISTRATION TO BEGIN IMPROVING THE PAVEMENT ON I-68 (NATIONAL FREEWAY) IN ALLEGANY COUNTY

​A Series of 24-Hour Closures Planned for Eastbound I-68 Entrance Ramp from Greene Street/US 220 South near Cumberland 

(May 23, 2024) - The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will continue a resurfacing project on the Greene Street /US 220 (S. McMullen Highway)​ ramp to eastbound I-68 (National Freeway) near the Fletcher Drive overpass in Cumberland on May 28. The pavement improvement project should be complete by May 31, weather permitting.

The project will require the temporary closure and detour of the Green Street/US 220 ramp to eastbound I-68 and close the left lane on eastbound I-68 from Tuesday at 8 p.m. until 6 p.m. on Wednesday. Beginning Wednesday from 8 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday evening, crews will close and work in lane 2 and the shoulder. Starting Thursday from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., crews will be closing and working on the ramp.

Additionally, there will also be a closure of the entrance onto eastbound I-68 from Fletcher Drive. Motorists can access eastbound I-68 by taking westbound I-68 at the Greene Street/US 220 interchange to exit 40 US 220/Vocke Road/Winchester Road to eastbound I-68.

The State Highway Administration’s contractor, Belt Paving, Inc. of Cumberland, will use electronic message boards, detour signs, barrels, and cones to guide motorists safely through the work zone.

The State Highway Administration appreciates motorists’ patience as we complete this necessary inspection and maintenance work. Drivers are asked to slow down in the work zone for the safety of all drivers and the crews working to improve our roadways.
