​Drivers Can Expect Daytime Single-Lane Closures Beginning Next Week; Daytime I-695 Delays Likely. 

(May 16, 2024) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will close the right lane on the inner loop of I-695 (Baltimore Beltway) between I-70 and I-83 (Baltimore-Harrisburg Expressway) during off-peak daytime hours beginning Monday, May 20, to perform rumble strip removal and shoulder patching work. This daytime work is expected to result in delays on the Beltway during work hours.  

Starting May 20, crews will close the right lane from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in certain locations on the inner loop of I-695 between I-70 and I-83. This work is expected to last for a month, weather permitting. Following completion of the inner loop, crews will begin work on the outer loop of I-695 which will include the single lane closure during off-peak day time hours. This switch to the outer loop is expected by mid-June, weather permitting.  

The work is part of the Maryland State Highway Administration’s project​ to improve reliability and reduce congestion along I-695 (Baltimore Beltway) between I-70 and MD 43 (White Marsh Boulevard). The project includes converting portions of the existing median shoulder to a travel lane for use during morning and evening rush hours. Once complete, the project will reduce congestion at bottlenecks along the corridor, improve safety and offer time savings for morning and evening commuters traveling on I-695 between Catonsville and Overlea. 

The State Highway Administration appreciates motorists’ patience as we complete this necessary construction work. Drivers are asked to slow down in the work zone for the safety of all drivers and the crews working to improve our roadways.
