Motorists Can Expect Delays from Temporary Traffic Stops on Capital Beltway

October 12, 2023 –The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration is alerting the public to several upcoming drawbridge openings on the Woodrow Wilson Bridge (I-95/I-495 bridge over the Potomac River) in Prince George’s County.

Boat Passage - Price of Baltimore II

Beginning at 11:30 p.m., Wednesday, October 18, the drawbridge will open for a planned boat passage of Pride of Baltimore II on the Potomac River, which will require full traffic stops in both directions on the bridge. The drawbridge will open again on Sunday, October 22 at 11:30 p.m. Both openings will take approximately 15-20 minutes.

Routine Maintenance

The State Highway Administration will perform routine drawbridge maintenance overnight Thursday, October 26 on the Woodrow Wilson Bridge. The work will begin at 11 p.m. and is expected to be completed by 5 a.m. on Friday, October 27, weather permitting.

During the maintenance work period, there will be brief, periodic openings of the drawbridge, resulting in full temporary stops in both directions of the Capital Beltway. These stops are expected to be 15 to 20 minutes in length and will occur several times overnight. This routine maintenance is necessary for the continued safe and reliable operation of the drawbridge.

Motorists are advised to allow extra driving time overnight to accommodate the delays. The State Highway Administration understands this work will inconvenience some travelers and asks all motorists to please stay alert and be patient as you pass through the area.
