Motorists Should Expect Temporary Overnight Ramp Closures and Detours 10 P.M. – 5 A.M. on Four Weeknights in August and September
(July 31, 2023) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will implement temporary ramp closures and detours for the scheduled inspections of elevated ramps at the I-695 (Baltimore Beltway) / I-70 (Eisenhower “Triple Bridges” interchange in Woodlawn, Baltimore County.
The temporary overnight ramp closures and detours will begin Wednesday night, August 2, and will continue on three more weeknights through late September. The State Highway Administration advises drivers on I-70 and I-695 in the vicinity of the interchange to plan for extra travel time and look ahead for ramp closures and detours. All ramp closure and detour dates are weather permitting.
Crews will work on the following schedule:
10 p.m. Wednesday, August 2 – 5 a.m. Thursday, August 3
- Northbound I-695 (inner loop) left ramp to westbound I-70 to Frederick - I-695 Exit 16A.
- Detour: Proceed right at ramp split onto Exit 16B eastbound I-70 Local, take eastbound I-70 past the MD 122 (Security Boulevard) interchange - I-70 Exit 94 – around the freeway end at the Park and Ride lot to access westbound I-70.
10 p.m. Thursday, August 3 – 5 a.m. Friday, August 4
- Southbound I-695 (outer loop) left ramp to eastbound I-70 Local - I-695 Exit 16B.
- Detour: Proceed on outer loop past I-70 and past Exit 15, US 40 (Baltimore National Pike) to Exit 14, Edmondson Avenue, turn left onto Edmondson Avenue, turn left onto northbound I-695 (inner loop) and proceed on the inner loop past Exit 15, US 40 back to Exit 16B, eastbound I-70 Local.
10 p.m. Wednesday, September 20 – 5 a.m. Thursday, September 21
- Eastbound I-70 left ramp to Northbound I-695 (inner loop) - I-70 Exit 91B.
- Detour: On eastbound I-70, stay left and proceed on eastbound I-70 (I-70 Local) past the MD 122 (Security Boulevard) interchange, around the freeway end at the Park and Ride lot to access westbound I-70.
10 p.m. Thursday, September 21 – 5 a.m. Friday, September 22
- Westbound I-70 right ramp to southbound I-695 (outer loop) - I-70 Exit 91A.
- Detour: Stay right and proceed on Exit 91B to northbound I-695 (inner loop) up to Exit 18B westbound MD 26 (Liberty Road), take the ramp, then turn immediately right from westbound Liberty Road onto the ramp to southbound I-695 and proceed south on I-695 past I-70.
Contractor Wagman Heavy Civil Inc. will perform the work and will use digital message boards, temporary signs, and barrels to safely guide drivers through the area.
The State Highway Administration understands temporary and ramp closures can be an inconvenience, but the work is necessary to maintain and improve the transportation system for all. Drivers are asked to stay alert, stay focused, look for reduced speed limits as well as driving pattern changes, and slow down in construction zones.
