(January 30, 2008) – This week, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will begin a $1 million project to improve the MD 404 (Shore Highway)/MD 313 (Federalsburg Road) intersection in Caroline County. The project will create a left turn lane along westbound MD 404 to go south along MD 313. Weather permitting, the project will be complete spring 2008.

This project will improve safety by providing motorists along westbound MD 404 with an exclusive left turn lane to access southbound MD 313. Currently, there is no left turn lane along westbound MD 404 to southbound MD 313. Vehicles currently wanting to turn left must sit in the through lane, which can create safety issues. In addition to creating a left turn lane, SHA will modify the existing traffic signal to include the new turn lane, install pavement markings and resurface the roadway.

During construction, motorists can expect daytime single lane closures along each direction of MD 404 and MD 313 between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. SHA will provide variable message signs, drums, and arrow boards to guide motorists through the work zone.

SHA awarded the contract to JJID, Inc. of Bear, Delaware. SHA and the contractor appreciate motorists’ patience during the construction process and remind all drivers to plan for extra travel time, buckle up, obey posted speed limits, stay alert and use caution while driving through highway work zones.

Citizens who have questions about traffic operations on MD 404, MD 313, or other State numbered routes in Caroline County may call SHA’s District 2 Office at 410-810-3200 or toll free at 1-800-637-9740.
