Motorists Should Expect Single Lane Closures Along I-81 and US 11

(August 26, 2008) – The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) has begun two resurfacing projects along major routes in Washington County. SHA has begun a $3 million project to resurface approximately four miles along northbound I-81 (Maryland Veterans Memorial Highway) between the West Virginia line and Halfway Boulevard in Washington County. SHA will complete the project by late-fall, weather permitting.

Motorists should expect nighttime single-lane closures along I-81, daily between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. Variable message signs, barrels, and arrow boards will guide motorists through the work zone. More than 60,000 vehicles travel along this section of I-81 each day. SHA awarded the contract to C. William Hetzer, Inc. of Hagerstown.

In addition, SHA will resurface approximately two miles along northbound and southbound US 11 (Virginia Avenue) between Bower Avenue and Noland Drive in Funkstown. SHA should complete the $1.2 million project by the end of December, weather permitting.

Motorists should expect single-lane closures along US 11, Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Variable message signs, barrels, and flagpersons will guide motorists through the work zone. More than 12,000 vehicles travel along this section of US 11 each day. SHA awarded the contract to Craig Paving of Hagerstown.

During the next several months, there could be more than 350 work zones. Remember that work zones are not only large construction projects possibly taking years to complete, but smaller, mobile operations such as mowing, pothole repair and litter pick ups.
