Motorists Should Expect Lane Closures Through Late Spring 2009

(August 26, 2008) – The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) has begun a $1.5 million project to resurface approximately two miles along both directions of MD 42 (Friendsville Road) between Kisner Road and the Youghiogheny River bridge in Garrett County. SHA should complete the project in late-spring 2009, weather permitting.

Motorists should expect single-lane closures along MD 42 between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m., Monday through Friday. Variable message signs, barrels, and flagpersons, will guide motorists through the work zone. More than 2,500 vehicles travel along this section of MD 42 each day, so motorists may experience delays during construction.

SHA awarded the contract to Keystone Lime Co., Inc. of Spring, Pa. Citizens who have questions about traffic operations along MD 42, or other State numbered routes in Garrett County, may call SHA’s District 6 Office at 301-729-8400 or toll free at 1-800-760-7138.

This traffic engineering improvement is part of the Choose Safety for Life campaign’s 100 Days of Safety. More than 600 people die every year in crashes in Maryland. These tragedies could be prevented if everyone practices five key measures: B- SAFE (Buckle up; Slow down – speeding kills; Always drive sober; Focus; Everyone shares the road – everyone gets home).
