Nighttime Double Closures Effect Southbound and Northbound Traffic; Motorists Encouraged To Use Alternate Routes

(November 16, 2008) - Beginning Sunday, November 16, weather permitting, between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m., the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will close two lanes along both southbound and northbound Shady Grove Road from I-370 to MD 115. The lane closures will occur over the course of four nights and are necessary to construct the Intercounty Connector (ICC) bridge over Shady Grove Road.

Traffic will be merged into one lane in both directions of Shady Grove Road. Shady Grove Road intersections impacted by the closures include I-370, Briardale Road, Epsilon Drive/Tupelo Drive and Muncaster Mill Road.

The work is part of the “Contract A” segment of the ICC from I-370 to east of MD 97 (Georgia Avenue) and the first of four ICC contracts to be constructed. Contract A is scheduled to open late 2010/early 2011.

As of early November early, Contract A was approximately 30 percent complete. The $475 million contract was awarded to Intercounty Constructors, a Joint Venture consisting of Granite Construction of Watsonville, CA; Corman Construction of Annapolis Junction, MD and G.A & F.C. Wagman of York, PA. For more information about the project, citizens may call the ICC Community Outreach staff at 1-866-462-0020.

Temporary barrels, traffic signs and portable variable message boards will alert and guide motorists through the work zone. SHA encourages all motorists to Choose Safety for Life while driving through work zones by obeying the speed limit and remaining alert at all times. More information about the Choose Safety for Life Campaign can be found at www.choosesafetyforlife.com.
