Traffic Shifts along I-95 Necessary to Build New Interchange as Part of ICC

(November 14, 2008) - Beginning Monday, November 17, weather permitting, between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m., the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will shift southbound traffic along I-95 south of MD 198 (Sandy Spring Road) to MD 212 (Calverton Road). The total shift will occur over the course of three nights, with double lane closures required to facilitate the switch. Travelers headed south during the three nights should expect delays and consider using the Baltimore Washington Parkway as an alternative.

The work is part of SHA’s Intercounty Connector (ICC) project “Contract C,” which includes the construction of the six-lane highway from US 29 to I-95. The work in this area of I-95 will ultimately be an interchange the new highway. This segment of the ICC is scheduled to open late 2011, or early 2012.

Motorists will still have four travel lanes and will drive through a work zone that includes concrete barriers, narrower travel lanes and a closed left shoulder. The right lane will remain 12 feet wide and the 10-foot right shoulder will remain open for the duration of the shift, expected to last 10 months.

The $513.9 million Contract C was awarded to ICC Constructors (IC3), a Joint Venture consisting of Shirley Contracting Company, LLC; Clark Construction Group, LLC; Guy F. Atkinson Construction, LLC; Facchina Construction Company, Inc. and Trumbull Corporation of Bethesda, MD. For more information about the project, citizens may call the ICC Community Outreach staff at 1-866-462-0020.

Temporary barrels, traffic signs, and portable variable message boards will alert and guide motorists through the work zone. SHA encourages all motorists to Choose Safety for Life while driving through work zones by obeying the speed limit and remaining alert at all times. More information about the Choose Safety for Life Campaign can be found at www.choosesafetyforlife.com.
