(February 5, 2009) – The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) has begun a $672,000 sound barrier project along MD 450 (Annapolis Road) near Moylan Drive in Bowie, Prince George’s County. Weather permitting, construction will be complete early summer 2009.

The project includes constructing of a 672-foot sound barrier along MD 450 to the east and west of Moylan Drive, relocating and replacing traffic signals, and landscaping. Additional safety improvements include replacing of existing pedestrian signals and upgrading sidewalks to Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards. The construction of sound barriers along MD 450 will benefit more than 100 homes in the Meadow Brook community.

To ensure worker and motorist safety during construction, concrete barrier wall is installed along the right turn lane of westbound MD 450. As a result, the right turn lane will be closed seven days a week, 24 hours a day through May 2009, weather permitting.

Pedestrians will be redirected to adjacent signals for safe passage through the work zone. SHA will restripe the farthest right through lane to create a shared right-through lane for the duration of the project. SHA will provide variable message signs, jersey barrier wall, drums, and arrow boards to guide motorists through the work zone. SHA awarded the contract to Rustler Construction, Inc. of Lanham, Md.
