(March 19, 2009) – On or about the week of March 23, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will begin a $1.1 million project to replace the bridge deck along southbound US 29 (Columbia Pike) over I-70 in Howard County. SHA anticipates completing the deck replacement by early fall 2009, weather permitting. The bridge, built in 1966, is structurally sound; however the concrete deck (the riding surface on the bridge) is in need of replacement.

SHA will close the right lane along southbound US 29 between MD 99 (Old Frederick Road) and the bridge over I-70. A single lane closure will be in place through early fall. SHA will replace right side of the deck first, followed by the left side this summer. The ramps from SB US 29 to east and westbound I-70 will be open and accessible throughout the deck replacement.

SHA awarded the contract to Pioneer Contracting of Odenton. SHA encourages motorists to stay alert in work zones and slow down. Citizens who have questions about traffic operations along US 29 or other State numbered routes in Howard County may call SHA’s District 7 Office at 301-624-8100 or toll free at 1-800-635-5119.

During the next several months there could be more than 350 work zones. Remember that work zones are not only large construction projects possibly taking years to complete, but smaller, mobile operations such as mowing, pothole repair and litter pick ups.
