(December 2, 2011) – On Monday, December 5 beginning at 9 p.m., the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) will replace a steel beam on the Waterford Road (MD 684H) bridge over eastbound MD 100 (Paul Pitcher Memorial Highway) near Pasadena in Anne Arundel County.  This work will require occasional, overnight 15-minute closures of eastbound MD 100 and MD 648H (both directions).  Westbound MD 100 traffic will not be affected.

Weather permitting, crews will begin the work by closing one lane of eastbound MD 100 and both directions of Waterford Road at 9 p.m. to prepare the crane and work site.  After 11 p.m., SHA and Maryland State Police will stop traffic for 15 minute intervals to allow for the safe removal and replacement of the steel beam.  Motorists will still be able to access both roadways between the closure periods so no detour is necessary.  All work should be completed by 5 a.m. Tuesday, December 6, weather permitting

SHA has routinely inspected the beam, which was damaged previously by an overheight vehicle.  The bridge is safe; however the beam needs to be replaced.  The Catherine Avenue overpass will undergo beam and deck repairs at a later date.  SHA’s contractor for the beam replacement is Concrete General, Inc. of Gaithersburg.  The estimated cost for the repairs is approximately $800,000.

While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes.  Stay alert – look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers.  Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Safer Driving.  Safer Work Zones.  For everyone.
