​Drivers Should Expect Daytime and Overnight Lane Closures to Move Concrete Traffic Barriers to Work Zone from Towson to east of Parkville 

(March 27, 2026) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway will relocate concrete barriers to create a work zone in the median of I-695(Baltimore Beltway) between MD 146 (Dulaney Valley Road) and MD 43 (White Marsh Boulevard) as soon as Sunday night, March 29.

The State Highway Administration will change the traffic pattern in this area by shifting the travel lanes on both eastbound and westbound I-695 (inner and outer loops) to the right side and will install new pavement markings and reflectors to define the travel lanes within the work zone. Weather permitting, this traffic pattern change will be complete late April.

This work is part of the $184 million I-695 Transportation Systems Management and Operations (TSMO) project in Baltimore County.

This project, once completed, will ease peak-hour congestion, enhance safety and travel time reliability along I-695 between I-70 and MD 43. More information about the project is available here.

Drivers should stay alert, avoid distractions and plan for extra travel time on I-695 between I-83 and east of MD 43 this spring and summer. Motorists can expect off-peak, single-left-lane closures on the inner loop and outer loop of the Beltway weekdays 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., as well as overnights, 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. the next morning. Crews may occasionally close two lanes overnight beginning at 10 p.m. The closures are not anticipated to occur during morning and evening rush hours.

Additionally, speed limits on I-695 are reduced from 55 mph to 45 mph in the work zones whenever contractor crews are present. The State Highway Administration will continue the Maryland SafeZones automated speed enforcement in the I-695 TSMO work zone, including warning signs, digital speed displays and cameras.    

Contractor crews will use digital message boards, temporary traffic signs and barrels to direct motorists through the highway work zone. The overall I-695 TSMO project between I-70 and MD 43 is scheduled for completion in late summer 2028.
