(April 17, 2012) – The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) is improving safety on MD 710 (Ordnance Road) in the Glen Burnie area.  SHA is now constructing a dedicated left turn lane from eastbound MD 710 to the VEIP (Vehicle Emissions Inspection Program) entrance.  The new lane will separate traffic turning left from through traffic, reducing the risk of rear-end collisions.  Work includes:

• Reconstructing and widening the existing eastbound shoulder to accommodate a left turn lane from eastbound MD 710 into the emissions station;
• Reconstructing and widening the existing eastbound shoulder at the US Army Reserve entrance (near the western limit of work) to accommodate a partial acceleration lane;
• Reconstructing curb and gutter within the project limits;
• Constructing a stormwater management grass swale facility, and
• Roadway signage and striping to accommodate the new left turn lane from eastbound MD 710 into the VEIP entrance.

Crews will place concrete barriers on MD 710 in the work area as part of a temporary traffic shift.  A flagging operation may be necessary to guide motorists safely through the work zone during barrier installation and removal.  Motorists are urged to use caution through the work zone, and to slow down and watch for stopped or turning traffic.  SHA awarded the $723,000 contract for this work to P. Flanigan of Baltimore. Weather permitting, all work should be complete in summer 2012.

On average, more than 13,000 vehicles travel this stretch of MD 710 each day.  As crews strive to keep work zones safe, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert – look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Safer Driving. Safer Work Zones. For everyone.
