(August 5, 2011) -- On Monday August 8, the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) will begin three weeks of overnight single and double lane closures to mill and pave southbound US 29 (Columbia Pike) between Briggs Chaney Road and Cherry Hill Road as part of the Intercounty Connector (ICC) project.

SHA will close one lane on southbound US 29 weeknights beginning at 5 p.m., followed by double lane closures beginning at 10 p.m.  All travel lanes will be open by 5 a.m. each morning.  No lane closures will occur on Friday and Saturday evenings.

SHA recommends motorists on southbound US 29 consider alternate routes, such as I-95 or US 1 (Washington Boulevard) to avoid delays. Variable message signs, cones and barrels will guide motorists through the work zone.
Crews are scheduled to begin the paving on northbound US 29 in the same area this September. The entire ICC is expected to open to traffic later this year or early 2012.

While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert - look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don't follow too closely. Safer Driving. Safer Work Zones. For everyone.
