ARRA Project Funding Moves Roadway Improvements Forward

(April 1, 2009) – This week, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will begin a $1.5 million resurfacing and safety improvement project along approximately two and one-half miles of US 219 (Garrett Highway). The project is located between north of MD 42 (Friendsville Road) and just south of Bumble Bee Road near Accident, Garrett County.

When driving through the work zone, motorists should expect single lane closures and delays along US 219 between 6:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. SHA will provide variable message signs, drums, and flag persons to guide motorists through the work zone. Near the McHenry area, this section of US 219 carries approximately 4,400 vehicles each day and services many area schools and businesses, such as Deep Creek Lake and Garrett Community College. Weather permitting, SHA expects to complete the project in late summer.

This project is funded through President Barack Obama’s landmark American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and is made possible by the Maryland Congressional Delegation’s passage of landmark economic recovery legislation. Projects such as this will stimulate Maryland’s economy by preserving or maintaining thousands of jobs.

SHA awarded the contract to Keystone Lime Co. of Springs, Pennsylvania. Those who have questions about traffic operations along US 219, or other State numbered routes in Garrett County, may call SHA’s District 6 Office at 301-729-8400 or toll-free at 1-800-760-7138.

During the next several months there could be more than 350 work zones. Remember that work zones are not only large construction projects possibly taking years to complete, but smaller, mobile operations such as mowing, pothole repair and litter pick ups.
