(July 22, 2011) – This weekend, the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) will split lanes on southbound I-695 (Baltimore Beltway Outer Loop) at Exit 18 (MD 26 - Liberty Road).  This major traffic change is scheduled for Sunday night, July 24 as part of a $25 million project to replace the I-695 Bridge over Liberty Road in Baltimore County.

SHA will shift traffic along the Outer Loop of I-695 to install concrete barrier and new pavement markings.  Crews will close one lane beginning at 7 p.m. followed by a double lane closure at 10 p.m. between south of I-795 and Security Boulevard (MD 122).  The ramp from southbound I-695 to Liberty Road will remain open overnight; however, temporary, short 15 minute road closures may occur on the ramp to allow crews and equipment to move safely through the work zone.

By Monday, July 25 at 5 a.m. all four lanes of the Outer Loop of I-695 will be open to traffic – with three through lanes open to the left of the concrete work zone barrier, and one through/exit lane open to the right of the work zone barrier.  Motorists who wish to reach Liberty Road from from southbound I-695 must stay to the right of the barrier.  In case of inclement weather, the traffic split will be performed the next possible weeknight.

Significant delays are expected both on southbound I-795 and along the northern part of the Baltimore Beltway through the Pikesville area approaching the new lane split.  The three lane / one lane split traffic pattern will be in place until late-fall.  SHA urges motorists traveling on I-795 South and the Outer Loop to plan for extra travel time on weekday mornings.

While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert - look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers.  Slow down and don't follow too closely.  Safer Driving. Safer Work Zones.  For everyone.
