(July 18, 2011) – Tomorrow night, the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) will replace two steel beams from the Hammonds Ferry Road bridge over southbound MD 295 (Baltimore-Washington Parkway).  Work will start at 10 p.m. on Tuesday, July 19 and continue through Wednesday, July 20 at 4 a.m.

To ensure the safety of motorists and workers, SHA will reduce MD 295 southbound to one lane beginning at 10 p.m.  At midnight, SHA will begin occasional 15-minute closures of all southbound lanes of MD 295.

Motorists planning to travel MD 295 south near BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport after 10 p.m. Tuesday night should allow extra time to reach their destination or consider alternate routes to the airport such as I-695 to I-95 south to I-195 east, I-695 to MD 170 south, or I-97 south to MD 176 west.  MD 295 traffic may use I-95 south, I-97 south or US 1 south.

This work is part of SHA’s $2.9 million project to rehabilitate the Nursery Road (MD 168) and Hammonds Ferry Road bridges over MD 295 in Anne Arundel County.  On average more than 90,000 vehicles travel this section of MD 295 each day.  For more information on this project, log onto www.roads.maryland.gov .  For the latest traffic information, including lane closures and live traffic cameras, visit www.chart.maryland.gov.  Customers are also invited to follow SHA on Twitter @MDSHA.

Construction season is here with numerous active work zone sites that include major construction projects taking months to complete and mobile operations taking only minutes.

While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert - look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers.  Slow down and don't follow too closely.  Safer Driving. Safer Work Zones.  For everyone.
