(July 12, 2011) –The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) is beginning a $1.3 million project to improve the MD 650 (New Hampshire Avenue) at Adelphi Road intersection in Silver Spring, Montgomery County.  Weather permitting, the project should be complete spring 2012.

SHA will widen MD 650 to add an additional through lane at the intersection with Adelphi Road.  Other work includes:
• Roadway patching, grinding and resurfacing the roadway;
• Drainage improvements;
• New signs and pavement markings;
• Sidewalk and ramp upgrades to Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA- compliant) standards;
• Curb and gutter replacement;
• Signal upgrades for audible/countdown pedestrian signals (APS/CPS);
• New guardrail;  and
• Landscaping.

Crews may close a single lane on MD 650 Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 3 pm.  Additional lane closures can be expected:

• Both directions MD 650 – During pipe installation work and final resurfacing, overnight lane closures may occur Sunday through Thursday between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., with double lane closures permitted between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.

SHA will provide variable message signs, drums, and arrow boards to guide motorists through the work zone.  SHA awarded the contract to Concrete General, Inc. of Gaithersburg.

While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert - look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers.  Slow down and don't follow too closely.  Safer Driving. Safer Work Zones.  For everyone.

Citizens who have questions about traffic operations on MD 650 or other State numbered routes in Montgomery County may call SHA’s District 3 Office at 301-513-7300 or toll free at 1-800-749-0737.
