(June 22, 2011) -- As part of the Maryland State Highway Administration’s (SHA) $2.5 billion Intercounty Connector (ICC) project, work is beginning tomorrow, Thursday June 23 on the Redland Middle School Trail project in the Rockville area of Montgomery County.

Motorists and local residents should be aware that during this period of construction, there will be intermittent, infrequent lane closures along MD 115 (Muncaster Mill Road) between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.  Flaggers will be in place to help guide motorists through the area during those lane closures.

The Redland Middle School Trail project runs along MD 115 at the intersection with Olde Mill Run.  The east end of the one-half mile trail, slightly past Olde Mill Run, connects with a crosswalk to cross MD 115 to Redland Middle School, and the west end of the trail at Applewood Lane connects with an existing sidewalk that continues along MD 115 towards Redland Road.

The trail will provide a safer and greener alternative for pedestrians and bicyclists, especially students traveling from school to the Winters Run Community and beyond who would otherwise have to walk on the side of the road. The trail is part of Montgomery County's Master Plan.

The ICC project team has conducted extensive public outreach in the area, including large community meetings, individual meetings with impacted residents, mailings, and informational flyers distributed to Redland Middle School students and parents.

Concrete General, Inc. of Gaithersburg was awarded a $365,680 contract to construct the trail, which is due to be completed late summer, prior to the start of the new school year.  For more information about the project, citizens may call the ICC Community Outreach staff at 1-866-462-0020 or visit the ICC project web site at www.iccproject.com.
