(March 24, 2011) – Tomorrow, the State Highway Administration (SHA) will shift traffic on South Street under the I-70 bridges.  Major construction activity is expected to begin this spring for SHA’s project to replace both bridges and widen I-70 to three lanes near South Street.  The shift will allow crews to prepare the work area for the bridge construction.

Crews will place barrels and concrete barrier walls to guide motorists through the lane shift prior to the morning commute.  Traffic will be shifted several feet to the east; this pattern will be in place on South Street through winter 2012.  Variable message signs will be placed at both approaches on South Street to alert motorists of the presence of the work zone. The overall project will be completed in summer 2013, weather permitting.

Citizens who have questions about I-70 or any other State numbered roadway in Frederick  County may call SHA’s District 7 Office at 301-624-8100 or toll free at 1-800-635-5119.

SHA encourages all motorists to drive responsibly and “Think Orange” while driving through highway work zones by driving the speed limit and remaining alert at all times.  Learn more about work zone safety and the Choose Safety for Life Campaign at www.choosesafetyforlife.com.
