(March 17, 2011) – Tonight, as part of the Maryland State Highway Administration’s (SHA) $2.55 billion Intercounty Connector (ICC) project, brief and intermittent traffic stoppages will be implemented on I-95 in both the northbound and southbound lanes, north of the MD 212/Powder Mill Road interchange (exit 29).  These 15-minute stoppages will take place after midnight.

These traffic stoppages are necessary to allow construction crews to move cranes into place underneath the Old Gunpowder Road bridge over I-95 to prepare for steel girder placement that will take place next week; work should be complete by 4 a.m.  The Old Gunpowder Road bridge over I-95 is being demolished, then rebuilt in sections, to allow for wider lanes of traffic along I-95 as part of ICC construction.

As a result of the structural steel work on the Old Gunpowder Road bridge, there will be additional intermittent 15-minute stoppages on both northbound and southbound lanes of I-95 during the early morning hours (midnight to 4 a.m.) next Sunday through Thursday.

The schedule for next week’s 15-minute stoppages on I-95 is as follows:
- Southbound lanes only: Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday (March 20-22).
- Northbound lanes only: Wednesday and Thursday (March 23-24).

Portable variable message signs are now in place to inform motorists of the I-95 traffic stoppages taking place this Friday morning. Those signs will be changed after Friday’s work to reflect next week’s 15-minute closures as well.

This work is all part of the Contract C section of the ICC, from just west of US 29 to just east of I-95.  Contract C, along with the Contract B portion of the ICC between MD 97/Georgia Avenue and I-95, are both on schedule to open later this year or in early 2012.

For more information about the project, persons may call the ICC Community Outreach staff at 1-866-462-0020 or visit the ICC project web site at www.iccproject.com.
