(January 10, 2011) – This weekend the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) shifts traffic on both sides of I-95/I-495 (Capital Beltway) at MD 201 (Kenilworth Avenue) Bridge as part of the $5 million MD 201 Bridge rehabilitation in Greenbelt.

Weather permitting, SHA will shift lanes to the left on both sides of I-95/I-495 starting at 8 p.m. Saturday, January 15 through 5 a.m. Monday, January 17.  The lane shift will be in place through the project completion this summer. Crews will close lanes as needed to complete the shift.  During the change SHA will close lanes as needed to safely complete the lane shift.  In case of inclement weather SHA will reschedule the work to the next available weekend.

The lane changes are necessary to provide a safety zone for workers and motorists as crews continue their work on the concrete bridge piers and abutment walls in the median, underneath the MD 201 Bridge.  Motorists may experience delays on I-95/I-495 during the traffic shift.

The rehabilitation of the 47 year old MD 201 Bridge will improve the ride quality for nearly 35,000 motorists in Prince George’s County.  This project is part of SHA’s bridge preservation and replacement program.  Work began in March 2010 and will be complete this summer, weather permitting.

SHA will use variable message signs, jersey barrier wall, drums, and arrow boards to guide motorists through the work zone.

When workers are on the road, THINK ORANGE, which is the color of construction signs, barrels and warning devices.  Please slow down, stay alert and expect the unexpected.  Choose to make work zone safety your business at www.choosesafetyforlife.com
