(December 22, 2010) – The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) has started a $98,000 project to improve pedestrian safety along nearly one-third a mile of US 40 (Patrick Street) between McCain and Waverly drives in Frederick.  SHA anticipates completing the project this spring, weather permitting.

SHA is installing a six foot high ornamental fence in the median of US 40 between McCain Drive and Waverly Drive to direct pedestrians to safe crossing points.  Pedestrians planning to cross US 40 are advised to use the McCain Drive, Waverly Drive, or Grove Hill Road intersections where there are safe crossing opportunities.  These intersections feature pedestrian countdown signals, which display a timer showing how much time is remaining to cross the street before the light for on-coming traffic changes.   

"We welcome this opportunity to improve safety along The Golden Mile," said SHA District Engineer David Coyne.  "SHA will continue to work with local stakeholders on future safety improvements."
