(December 20, 2010) – In June the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) temporarily closed the MD 464 (Point of Rocks Road) Bridge over Catoctin Creek east of Brunswick in Frederick County.  The closure was necessary to replace the 76 year-old bridge.

SHA originally planned to reopen the bridge in early December.  Unfortunately, given the recent stretch of cold weather SHA does not anticipate reopening the road until late January or early February, about two months later than originally anticipated.  The projected reopening timeframe is contingent on suitable weather necessary to complete the remaining construction.

Remaining work includes pouring concrete for bridge deck walls, installing safety railings on the wall once concrete has cured, and paving the approaches to the bridge.  Additional approach paving will be necessary in spring 2011 to complete the project.

“SHA appreciates the cooperation of local residents, business owners and commuters as our contractor works to complete the project in unseasonably cold conditions,” said SHA District Engineer Dave Coyne.  “Recent subfreezing temperatures are preventing concrete from being poured but we are ready once Mother Nature warms to at least 40 degrees.”

Drivers will continue to use the traffic detours:
- Westbound MD 464 will be detoured right onto Lander Road, to westbound
US 340, to westbound MD 180 (Jefferson Pike), left onto Olive School Road and back to westbound MD 464;
- Eastbound MD 464 will be directed to a left onto Olive School Road, to eastbound MD 180, to eastbound US 340, to Lander Road, back to eastbound
MD 464.
