(July 9, 2010) – On or about Wednesday July 14, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will close the US 50 median crossover at Old Ocean Gateway, just west of MD 331 (Rhodesdale-Vienna Road) in Dorchester County.

SHA crews will install flexible posts in the US 50 median and restripe the intersection to eliminate left turn movements from US 50 westbound onto Old Ocean Gateway and from Old Ocean Gateway onto US 50 westbound.  Motorists will still be able to make right turns at the intersection and use the US 50 eastbound exit ramp to access Old Ocean Gateway.

The restrictions will improve safety at the intersection by eliminating the possibility of left turn conflicts and vehicle queuing in the US 50 median.  SHA will place signs along US 50 and Old Ocean Gateway to alert motorists to the change.

Motorists proceeding westbound on US 50 can access Old Ocean Gateway by using the MD 331 interchange to the east of the crossover or by making a u-turn just west of the closed crossover.  Motorists on Old Ocean Gateway can access US 50 westbound via MD 331.

SHA encourages all motorists to drive responsibly and “Think Orange” while driving through highway work zones by driving the speed limit and remaining alert at all times. Learn more about work zone safety and the Choose Safety for Life campaign at ww.choosesafetyforlife.com.
