(June 2, 2010) – The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration is beginning a $300,000 project to resurface one and one-half miles of southbound MD 24/US 1 Bel Air Bypass between Red Pump/Bynum Road and the traffic signal at MD 24 (Vietnam Veterans Memorial Highway) near the Harford Mall and Bel Air Town Center. 

Beginning next Monday June 7, crews will “mill” (remove the top layer) and resurface pavement with lane closures permitted between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 6 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday.  SHA anticipates completing the resurfacing by early August.

Sections of the two-lane roadway will be reduced to one lane with flagpersons controlling two-way traffic within the work zone.  SHA advises motorists to plan ahead for extra travel time on the MD 24/US 1 Bel Air Bypass and to use caution when traveling through the work zone. 

SHA reminds motorists they must also use headlights 24 hours a day on the undivided highway section of the MD 24/US 1 Bel Air Bypass.  The fine is $90.

     
The MD 24/US 1 Bel Air Bypass resurfacing project is made possible through Governor Martin O’Malley’s aggressive management of the requirements of the landmark American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).  This project, together with other ARRA projects, is stimulating Maryland’s economy by preserving and creating thousands of jobs.  The State’s contractor for the resurfacing project is Gray and Son, Inc. of Timonium, Md.
