(May 13, 2010) – On May 17, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will begin a project to resurface approximately three miles of MD 58 (Cearfoss Pike) north of Hagerstown in Washington County.  SHA anticipates completing the $900,000 project in early July, weather permitting.

SHA will resurface MD 58 from north of I-81 (Maryland Veterans Memorial Highway) to MD 63 (Greencastle Pike).  Motorists traveling on MD 58 should expect single-lane closures Monday through Friday between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.  Flaggers, variable message signs, barrels, and temporary signs will guide motorists through the work zone.  Approximately 14,000 vehicles travel along this section of MD 58 each day; motorists should expect delays.

This project is made possible through Governor Martin O’Malley’s aggressive management of the requirements of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, bringing critically needed transportation investments to Maryland.  Projects such as these are stimulating Maryland’s economy by supporting hundreds of jobs.  Follow the delivery of these projects at www.recovery.maryland.gov, which tracks every category of ARRA spending and provides contract-level details to the public in an effort to achieve new levels of government transparency and efficiency.

SHA awarded the contract to C. William Hetzer Inc. of Hagerstown.  Those who have questions about traffic operations on MD 58, MD 63, I-81, or other State numbered routes in Washington County may call SHA’s District 6 Office at 301-729-8400 or toll free at 1-800-760-7138.

Remember that work zones are not only large construction projects possibly taking years to complete, but smaller, mobile operations as well.  Choose to make work zone safety your business at www.choosesafetyforlife.com
