(May 12, 2010) -   Next week, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) begins a $4.3 million safety and resurfacing project on 4.6 miles of northbound I-95/I-495 (Capital Beltway) between MD 5 (Branch Avenue) and D’Arcy Road, a half-mile of MD 4 (Pennsylvania Avenue) between I-95/I-495 and Old Marlboro Pike/Westphalia Road, and the exit ramp from Forestville Road/MD 337 to northbound I-95/I-495 in Prince George’s County.  These projects are funded through the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act.

The project will improve the ride quality for more than 180,000 motorists on I-95/I-495, nearly 53,000 motorists on MD 4, and close to 4,000 motorists on Forestville Road/MD 337.   These sections of roadway were last resurfaced in 2001 and the current pavement is reaching the end of its service life.

Work includes:
• Grinding and resurfacing northbound I-95/I-495 between MD 5 and D’Arcy Road;
• Grinding and resurfacing MD 4 between I-95/I-495 and Westphalia Road/Old Marlboro Pike and the ramps to and from MD 4 to access northbound I-95/I-495,  replacing traffic loop detectors in the turn lanes, and installing new video detection for the through lanes at the intersection of MD 4 and Westphalia Road/Old Marlboro Pike, and;
• Grinding and resurfacing the Forestville Road/ MD 337 (Allentown Road) ramp to northbound I-95/I-495.

Other work includes repairing/replacing existing inlets, cleaning pipes, roadway patching, repairing/replacing guardrail, repairing/replacing concrete curb and gutter, and installing new pavement markings.

Motorists may experience delays on I-95/I-495 and MD 4 during construction.  Single lane closures will occur Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and overnight Monday through Friday between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m.  Double lane closures can be expected overnight Sunday through Thursday between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.   Ramps will be closed one at a time for resurfacing overnight Sunday through Thursday between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.  The ramp closures are not anticipated until late-fall, and detours will be posted.

This project is made possible through Governor Martin O’Malley’s aggressive management of the requirements of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, bringing critically needed transportation investments to Maryland.  Projects such as these are stimulating Maryland’s economy by supporting hundreds of jobs.  Follow the delivery of these projects at www.recovery.maryland.gov, which tracks every category of ARRA spending and provides contract-level details to the public in an effort to achieve new levels of government transparency and efficiency.

SHA will use flaggers, variable message signs, jersey barrier wall, drums, and arrow boards to guide motorists through the work zone.  SHA awarded the contract to Aggregate Industries, Inc.

When workers are on the road, THINK ORANGE, which is the color of construction signs, barrels and warning devices.  Please slow down, stay alert and expect the unexpected.  Choose to make work zone safety your business at www.choosesafetyforlife.com
