(April 27, 2010) – The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) is rehabilitating of two Ridge Road bridges over MD 295 (Baltimore-Washington Parkway) in Anne Arundel County.  Weather permitting, the estimated completion for the project is spring 2011.

Work on the two overpasses includes replacing the bridge decks and parapets, cleaning and repainting structural steel and resurfacing the bridge approaches. In the next few weeks, the contractor will reduce Ridge Road to one lane over MD 295 during construction, and regulate traffic across the bridges with a temporary signal.

During off-peak hours, one or two lanes of MD 295 may close briefly in either direction for the safety of drivers and workers.  Motorists on MD 295 can expect occasional off-peak single lane and shoulder closures throughout the project.  This project includes removing of the existing stone facade and related support beams and may require overnight lane closures.

Constructed in 1950, the Ridge Road bridges over MD 295 carry an average of 1,100 vehicles per day.  Both bridges were last inspected in 2008 and are structurally sound.  Replacing the bridge decks will extend bridge service life an estimated 20 years or more.

SHA awarded the $1.2 million contract to Pioneer Contracting Company of Odenton.  Questions about this project may be addressed to Bob Rager, SHA District 5 Community Liaison, toll free 1-800-331-5603, ext. 1020, or rrager@sha.state.md.us.  Receive SHA news and information delivered to you electronically by subscribing to one of the RSS feeds at www.roads.maryland.gov
