SHA Will Repair a Wash Out Behind the Sound Wall along the Beltway; Minimal Impact to Traffic Expected

(February 24, 2010)  On or about March 1, The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will repair a wash out behind a sound wall located along I-495 (Capital Beltway) at MD 187 (Old Georgetown Road) in Bethesda, Montgomery County.  Weather permitting, work should be complete late spring.

The recent heavy snows and subsequent melting has caused a washout of the ground behind the sound wall.  Crews will repair the drainage and erosion by installing inlets and pipes to direct and improve storm water runoff.  Other work includes re-grading the existing ditch and stabilizing the surrounding affected area. 

SHA will temporarily remove a panel of the existing sound wall and replace it once the project is complete.  Residents may notice an increase in noise while the panel is removed.
 

Crews will place jersey wall barrier along the deceleration lane from I-495 to MD 187; this will cause a slight reduction in the length of the exit lane.  The reduction is necessary to ensure worker and motorist safety as crews move heavy equipment to and from the repair site.  There will be no lanes restricted from the through lanes of I-495. 

Crews will work Monday through Friday between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.  There is no planned overnight work or weekend work.  SHA awarded the contract to Allied Construction.
