MD 109 Bridge Rehabilitation Project Complete in Montgomery County

(January 30, 2010) – As part of its continued system preservation efforts, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) completed improvements to the MD 109 (Old Hundred Road) Bridge over Little Bennett Creek, in Hyattstown, Montgomery County.  The bridge will resume normal traffic operations by Wednesday, February 3, weather permitting.

The $850,000 bridge redecking project began May 2009 and included removal and replacement of the concrete bridge deck, cleaning, painting the steel beams, and repairing portions of the existing bridge abutments to extend the service life of the bridge.

The MD 109 Bridge, originally constructed in 1951, was structurally sound but needed repairs to the concrete deck (the driving surface) and a portion of the abutments.  Fort Meyer Construction Corporation was the general contractor for this project.

SHA thanks customers for their patience and encourages all motorists to drive responsibly and “Think Orange” while driving through work zones by driving the speed limit and remaining alert at all times. On any day, there could be more than 350 work zones in Maryland.  Remember that work zones are not only large construction projects possibly taking years to complete, but smaller, mobile operations such as mowing, pothole repair and litter pickups.  Choose to make work zone safety your business at www.choosesafetyforlife.com.
